Families in Canada looking to reunite with their loved ones have an important opportunity coming up — but you’ll need to act fast.

On July 16, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) officially announced that the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) will reopen starting July 28, 2025, for a limited time. The intake period will run for approximately two weeks, during which up to 10,000 invitations to apply will be sent to eligible sponsors.

This update is a major step for families hoping to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada as permanent residents. But navigating the process under Canada’s immigration laws can be complex , and with only a short window to apply, it’s essential to be prepared.

If you are unsure whether you’re eligible, or if you want to maximize your chances of success, working with a trusted immigration lawyer in Ontario like Amy Osman can make all the difference.

What is the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)?

The PGP allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence in Canada. Successful applicants are able to live in Canada long-term and may eventually qualify for health benefits and citizenship.

This program is different from the Super Visa, which allows extended stays but does not lead to permanent residency. Under the PGP, sponsored parents and grandparents can become part of Canada’s immigration stream permanently, making it one of the most sought-after options for family reunification.

Key Details for the 2025 PGP Intake

  • Invitations to apply will begin July 28, 2025
The IRCC will begin sending invitations on this date and continue for approximately two weeks.
  • Only those who submitted an Interest to Sponsor form in 2020 are eligible
Due to the high volume of applications already in the pool, IRCC will be drawing from the 2020 intake pool. If you submitted your form that year and haven’t yet received an invitation, check your email inbox — and your spam folder.
  • Up to 10,000 applications will be accepted in 2025
These will be selected from the 2020 list only, not new submissions.
  • Act quickly
Once invitations are sent out, there will be a tight deadline to complete and submit your full application — typically within 60 days.

Why This Matters — And Why Time Is of the Essence

For many immigrant families, sponsoring parents or grandparents is about more than paperwork — it’s about bringing generations together. Whether you’re caring for aging parents or want your children to grow up with their grandparents nearby, this program creates opportunities that are truly life-changing.

However, due to the limited number of invitations and the narrow eligibility pool, many applicants find the process stressful and confusing. Understanding the technical requirements, compiling proper documentation, and meeting deadlines are all critical steps — and any error can delay or even disqualify your application.

That’s why working with a knowledgeable immigration law firm in Windsor is so important.
